Vanuatu Coastal Adaptation Project

1. PROJECT OBJECTIVE

Sustainable Development Goals: 5-Gender equality, 6- Clean water and sanitation, 13- Climate action, 14-Life below water, 15- Life on land.

Objective: To improve the resilience of the vulnerable areas and communities therein to the impacts of climate change through the conservation of biodiversity and natural ecosystems and the implementation of integrated approaches in order to sustain livelihoods, food production and ensure biodiversity conservation and reduce land degradation by building on the lessons learned from the first phase project.

2. RELEVANT VANUATU DEVELOPMENT GOAL

Social inclusion, strong and effective institutions, Food and nutrition security, Blue green economic growth, natural resource management, Ecosystems and biodiversity. Includes an increase in forest and tree cover and financial resources to help mitigate and increase resilience.

3. PROJECT COMPONENTS (VCAP 2)

  • Component 1: Integrated community approaches to natural resource management and climate change adaptation developed and implemented.
  • Component 2: Information and early warning systems on coastal hazards.
  • Component 3: Climate Change and Natural Resource Management Governance.
  • Component 4: Knowledge Management and Lessons Sharing.

EXPECTED IMPACTS & TARGETS

  • Reach entire population of Vanuatu (307,150: 51% male, 49% female).
  • 2,298 Ha of new terrestrial Protected Areas (PA) and 11,215 Ha under improved management.
  • 575 Ha of new marine PA and 1,766 Ha under improved management.
  • Restoration of 2,000 Ha agricultural lands, 2,000 Ha forest land, and 1,000 Ha grasslands.
  • 8 climate smart model farms established.
  • 25 investments in climate-proofing water provision infrastructure.
  • 6 Automatic weather stations installed and operational.
  • 2,000 participants in training activities; 4,000 beneficiaries reached via awareness programs.
