DEPC and J-PRISM II strengthen the policy-making and compliance of solid waste management nationwide

On February 24th, 2020 at the VMGD conference room of the Ministry of Climate Change, the third Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) of the “Japanese Technical Cooperation Project for Promotion of Regional Initiative on Solid Waste Management in Pacific Island Countries Phase II (J-PRISM II)” (Project period: February 2017 – February 2022) was held as a fruitful discussion among the counterparts of J-PRISM II in Vanuatu. The participants confirmed the progress of the project last year and agreed on the work plan for next year.
The launching ceremony of the Vanuatu Recycling and Waste Management Association was successfully held on the 25th November 2019 in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
Honorable Charlot Salwai Tabimasmas, Prime Minister of Vanuatu, expressed his excitement during his keynote address to formally recognize the existence and operation of the new association.
The Government of Vanuatu is in the process of implementing a nation-wide Marine Spatial Plan which will include multiple, different types of ocean zones, including national networks of ecologically representative Marine Protected Areas.

The Government of Vanuatu will be implementing national Marine Spatial Plan by 2020 and, as part of that work, is seeking to optimise the efficiency and effectiveness of existing marine and maritime compliance systems and assets and to prioritise acquisition of any new resources required. A consultant is required to facilitate this process. This work will be funded by the Italian Government.
