The Edenhope Foundation, based on the west coast of Santo, Vanuatu, is working to establish a locally-based Conservation Network for the Santo Mountain Chain – one of CEPF's priority KBAs. As a joint initiative of Edenhope, GIZ and CEPF, the community of Tasmate on the west coast of Santo hosted a 3-day workshop from August 23rd-25th, focusing on food security and environmental conservation.
The workshop also served as the launch for this locally based conservation network. Participants named it the “Santo Sunset Environmental Network”.
The long term vision is a network comprised of local, customary landowners who will be empowered to take action on protecting and conserving the natural environment on the west coast for future generations to take care of and enjoy.
Representatives from at least 15 villages on the west coast will receive training on topics related to natural resource management, ecological monitoring, and best practices for establishing and maintaining a Community Conservation Area (CCA).
